Notes of the Faceless One

[Excerpt]
I came to life today, in this dark place. Then, the Master’s Voice taught me my place in this world, and spoke of my role in the accomplishment of the Great Work. He told me I have to forget the surface world, the lemon trees and the sunlight, that these dreamlike memories were not mine but would stay with me, and that he had taken away from me the face that wasn’t mine too. Toiling on the Master’s Great Work makes me happy.

[Excerpt]
The prepatory rituals are done. The uncompleted womb left now wears his imprint.

[Excerpt]
The White Flame Brothers came, trickling down by small groups from the tunnels. They seemed pleased by the rooms prepared for them, and began at once the consecration of their temple. In accordance with the Master’s plans, they mistook me for a sympathizer of their ridiculous beliefs and don’t suspect my true allegiances. They will make useful guardians to protect the Great Work in secret.

[Excerpt]
As foretold by the Master’s Voice, the underground Saurians came by the caverns. I presented myself as an emissary to their prophet, named Srullak Kur, and was welcomed as a divine messenger. Apparently, their complete collaboration was mine even before I spoke, as I had appeared in the prophetic dreams that lead Srullak and his people to this place. Clearly they believe the Master is their god whom they call the Burrower Beneath.

[Excerpt]
All necessary attendants being here, we proceeded to the first infusion of divine energy, under the cover of fake and uselessly complex rituals. At first, Thalhoon was reluctant to lend hand in what he called blasphemous rituals. I had to remind him of what he owed to our timely help, and of what he risked by rejecting our demands. The thought of the future destruction of Velos, and most notably of the Sable Brothers dwelling there, also seemed to help him stiffle his scruples.

[Excerpt]
Partial success. While the darkness of Erebus refuses to respond as I wish, I have managed to contact denizens of that shadowy world. I have compelled them to serve me, but they hunger. I will allow them to seek their sustenance on the surface during night when they will not be seen.

[Excerpt]
I had to inform the Master’s Voice that the birthing is slightly behind schedule. I should receive new instructions soon.

[Excerpt]
The Master’s Voice has given a new task. The Seal of Zubab has been found in the Tomb. It is a great victory. Crawling over it were strange worms. It is a sign! The Great Beast slouches ever closer. I must discover the secret of the worms.

[Excerpt]
Someone has slain one of the shadowbeasts. News spreads that the slayer’s name is Samedi.

[Excerpt]
Those idiots are impatient to see the birth of the Great Work. If only they knew that their participation in the infusion rituals tied their lifeforces to it! Soon, their deaths will give the needed impulsion for the womb’s bursting. I only need to figure out how to slay them defending the womb so that their deaths become a proper sacrifice. I giggle in glee thinking of my part in the coming of the next world. But the right time hasn’t come yet. A premature birth would produce a weakened spawn.

[Excerpt]
The study of the worms gathers apace. The Master’s Voice demands results soon. He told me that specific necrotic reagents could be used to stimulate them. They are not actually alive though they writhe. I can sense a breathrough will occur soon.

[Excerpt]
Great news. Some fools have encountered the witch cult at the butchershop. The witch Shefa will soon flee. I have made sure that evidence linking her to the tunnels below will be left behind. The inquisition is sure to send people to investigate.

[Excerpt]
Intruders have been located in the temple! Thalhoon’s assistants have fled down here with a story of a huge battle. Thalhoon is likely already dead along with most of his followers. It should not be long now before everything is completed. They also report that this group is lead by the same Samedi who slew the shadowbest months ago. What irony!

[Excerpt]
I do not understand what is taking them so long! It has been at least a month since the fire worshippers were killed, yet no one has returned to explore the rest of the cavern. Could Samedi have somehow figured out what was planned? I cannot conceive it. At least it gives me more time to complete my studies of the worms.

[Excerpt]
The Saurians have been slain, and at least three warriors made their way to the door of the labyrinth, yet they have not entered it. Perhaps they are waiting for reinforcements?

[Excerpt]
Yet again it has been weeks since the last slaughter. What is keeping them? I am able to further our plans however and complete my mastery over the spawn of Erebus. If needed, I will send more horrors to the surface to prompt their intervention. I must be patient.

[Excerpt]
Still nothing. I see that they are wasting time in the sewers slaying rats. They know there is a connection. I have warned the daughters. If the fools find them first, they will find more evidence that their true opponent is below.

[Excerpt]
I have completed my preparations. If I fail to adequately defend the labyrinth, they may know something is not right. Perhaps they will bring many to the slaughter. I hope so. Let there be many corpses for the worms to feed on. I have completed all my work with the extra time given to me. Not only will the shadow rise, but I have sent the secret of the worms to the Master. He was most pleased. Soon the contagion will spread.
